Planned: Upcoming changes to AirPennNet-Guest and Eduroam on July 23, 2020

Affected service(s): Wireless - AirPennNet-Guest and Eduroam

Start date and time: 07/23/2020 7:00 AM

End date and time: 07/23/2020 8:00 AM

As ISC continues to evaluate and refine our network security plan, we are considering ways in which we can continue to improve the protections we are providing to University assets on PennNet. On 7/23/2020 at 7am we will be creating a new network segment that will include wireless users who we consider to be guests. Details below:

  • A guest user for wireless would be considered any user connected to AirPennNet-Guest and anyone who has connected to eduroam by authenticating to an entity other than Penn.
  • All blocks and filters in place at the network border will now impact these users accessing campus resources. The list is fluid and managed by the Firewall Governance Committee, but includes known bad traffic and protocols like telnet.
  • These users will be placed in a distinct IP range (10.250.0.0/15, 2607:f470:34::/48) that differentiates them from those who are known Penn constituents as verified by our authentication systems.
  • It is recommended to treat these ranges as subnets outside of PennNet as these users are not affiliated with Penn.
