Planned: Wireless at Penn outage on September 18, 2021

Summary

On Saturday, September 18, 2021, from 2:00 am until 9:00 am, ISC will be performing emergency maintenance to address wireless performance issues on campus. During the maintenance window, users on campus will experience rolling wireless outages as well as additional instability issues.

Thank you in advance for your patience while we work to improve the wireless experience on campus.

Additional Information

Since the beginning of the fall term, ISC has been investigating wireless issues occurring in the College Houses. The types of issues being reported include general slowness, lack of stability, and poor coverage in some areas.

Many of these issues are directly related to the College House wireless improvement project of summer 2021. This project involved the installation or upgrade of over 2,400 wireless access points throughout the College Houses. Despite the best modeling, ISC anticipated that there would be a need to fine-tune the network to address issues reported as students returned to campus. This work is still ongoing.

However, our investigation has also determined that other issues being reported are indicative of more systemic problems which could potentially impact other locations on campus. To address this, ISC is actively pursuing multiple troubleshooting paths to identify the root cause. We have also engaged Aruba (our wireless infrastructure vendor) as well as a third-party consulting firm for their assistance.
