Messages (iChat)

Apple's Messages (previously known as iChat in OS X Lion 10.7) is a supported instant messaging client for OS X. Instant messaging is the exchange of typed messages between computer users in real time via the Internet. Messages is included with Apple's OS X operating system.

Messages ships with and functions correctly in OS X Mountain Lion (10.8), while iChat ships with and functions correctly in OS X Lion (10.7).

 

Configuring Messages for Penn's Jabber service

This document provides instructions for configuring the version of Messages that ships with OS X Mountain Lion for the Penn Jabber Service.

Configuring Mail for the Penn Online Directory will allow you to automatically look up a person in the Penn Online Directory and transfer their contact information into your Address Book. Each time you search the Penn Online Directory you will need to authenticate with your PennKey.

  1. Launch Apple's Messages application.
  2. Select Preferences... from the Messages menu.
  3. Click the Accounts icon.
  4. Click the + button in the lower left-hand corner. The Account Setup window appears.
  5. From the Account Type: dropdown list, choose Jabber.
  6. In the Account Name: field, where username is your actual PennKey username, type username@upenn.edu
  7. In the Password: field, enter your PennKey password.
  8. Click the Server Options arrow.
  9. In the Server: field, type jabber.upenn.edu.
  10. In the Port: field, type 5223.
  11. Select the Use SSL checkbox.
  12. Click the Done button.

  2. Click the Continue button. The Account Setup window appears.
  3. From the Account Type: dropdown list, choose Jabber.
  4. In the User Name: field, where username is your actual PennKey username, type username@upenn.edu
  5. In the Password: field, enter your PennKey password.
  6. Click the Server Options arrow.
  7. In the Server: field, type jabber.upenn.edu.
  8. In the Port: field, type 5223.
  9. Select the Use SSL checkbox.
  10. Click the Continue button. The Conclusion window appears.
  11. Click the Done button. iChat will launch.
