Wireless at Penn Community Update for IT Providers

Welcome to the Fall 2022 term! To best prepare Wireless at Penn users and the IT support staff that support them, we updated our Connect to AirPennNet and JoinNow guide. We reorganized the guide to make it more user-friendly and added detailed step-by-step instructions for macOS, Windows, iOS, and Android devices. With the start of the semester, Campus IT support providers are encouraged to share the information in this guide with their users to help them connect.

We also want to take a minute to highlight a few steps ISC has taken to improve the underlying Wireless at Penn network infrastructure over recent months:

  • We added authentication servers and re-designed the Access Point (AP) groupings to minimize hopping between controllers as folks traverse campus. These steps will reduce re-authentications and increase our capacity to handle them, improving the overall user experience.
  • We have made changes to Airgroup to better align with our vendor's best practice recommendations. These changes will provide a better experience communicating with IoT devices on AirPennNet-Device.
  • We added sensors in strategic locations to help us test connections and proactively detect problems.
  • We partnered with a consultant to review our configurations, completed several wireless signal surveys in buildings across campus, and continue adding and upgrading wireless access points to improve coverage.

Thank you for being our trusted IT partners. If you have questions about Wireless at Penn or any other ISC service, please contact ISC Client Care at http://supportcenter.upenn.eduhelp@isc.upenn.edu, or 215-898-1000.
