Penn 2017 National Cybersecurity Awareness Month Events

In observance of National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) this October, the ISC Office of Information Security (OIS) has partnered with Penn Schools and Centers to hold three major events for faculty, staff and students.

The Common Sense Census Research

Internet Safety for Kids:  On October 13th, OIS and Wharton are hosting a must-attend event for anyone interested in understanding the full context and impact of technology on the social, emotional and academic lives of children and teens. Erica Pelavin is a psychologist, educator, and the co-founder of Palo Alto-based MyDigitalTAT2.   Erica’s lecture is an eye-opening look at the constantly-changing number of applications and platforms currently used by teens.  Her organization, MyDigitalTAT2, emphasizes the need to understand how and why teens use technology and encourage parents and educators to hold an ongoing dialogue with kids on safe usage. Joining Erica for a panel discussion after the lecture are three Penn subject matter experts: Dr. Amy Bleakley (Annenberg School of Communication Research Scientist), Mr. Scott Schafer (University Privacy Officer), and Dr. Wiam Younes (OIS Training Officer).

Balancing Research with Privacy & Security: A week later, on October 20th, OIS is partnering with senior administrators and researchers at the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Nursing for a panel discussion on the security and privacy-related tools, challenges and resources that come into play when conducting research at Penn.   This discussion will focus on the important collaboration between Penn researchers and IT staff in meeting federal, state, and University data security and privacy requirements. Panelists include Dr. Jose Bauermeister, Presidential Associate Professor of Nursing; Ms. Elizabeth Peloso, Associate Vice President/Associate Vice Provost, Office of Research Services; Dr. Stewart Varner, Price Lab for Digital Humanities Managing Director; Dr. Christine Brisson, Director of Information Security and Unix Systems at SAS Computing; Ms. Elizabeth Crutchley, Penn Infant Language Center Lab Manager.

Free & Legal (Thor: Ragnarok Movie Screening):  This movie night for students is being hosted by OIS on November 9th at the Cinemark Theater on Walnut. The free screening of “Thor: Ragnarok” will be preceded by a brief discussion on DMCA and Penn’s copyright policy.  This movie night is open to all Penn students, however, due to limited theater seating pre-event registration is required.
