LastPass Premium at Penn

The University has partnered with LastPass to supply LastPass Premium password management accounts to all members of the Penn community.  LastPass offers a secure vault for storage of your passwords, and other secure information, allowing users to create stronger, and more varied passwords for their various accounts, ultimately leading to a more secure environment.  Along with this vault comes a series of tools, including a random password generator, password auditing tools, and a password auto-change tool.  The Premium license offered to the Penn community also allows for LastPass to be set up on an unlimited number of devices (desktop or mobile), allows for sharing of passwords, and gives access to more security via multiple multifactor authentication models.

To sign up for LastPass Premium at Penn, you can navigate to https://lastpass.com/upenn/ and fill out the form, shown below:

On the form, you have the option to create a new LastPass Premium account, or to upgrade an existing LastPass account to Premium.

**Note:  If you already pay for a LastPass Premium account, personally, you can upgrade it to extend your license by one year, for free.

Creating a new account

To create a new account, complete the following steps:

  1. Enter your Penn affiliated email address in the text box shown.
  2. Select the “No, I do not have a LastPass account but I would like to create one.” check box.
  3. In the new text box that appears, enter your email address that you wish to use to log in to LastPass and receive email alerts.
    1. This can be either your Penn affiliated email or a personal email.
    2. Please note that using your Penn affiliated email may cause conflicts if you also intend to use Penn’s iteration of LastPass Enterprise.  In this instance, it is recommended that you use an alternate, personal email address for LastPass Premium.
  4. Click Submit.

  5. You should be redirected to a confirmation page.

  6. You will receive an email at your Penn affiliated email address with a confirmation link for you to click. This link will allow you to complete the creation of your account.

Upgrading an Existing Account

If you already have an existing LastPass Account, Free or Premium, you can upgrade it or extend your Premium license for one year, by following these steps:

  1.  Enter your Penn affiliated email address in the text box shown.
  2.  Select the “Yes, I already have a LastPass account that I would like to upgrade.” check box.
  3.  In the new text box that appears, enter your existing LastPass account email address.
  4.  Click Submit.

  5. You should be redirected to a confirmation page.

  6. You will receive an email at your Penn affiliated email address, with a confirmation link for you to click, which will upgrade or extend your LastPass Premium license.
  • Penn also offers LastPass Enterprise licensing for schools and organizations that wish to participate.
  • If your institution uses LastPass Enterprise, you can still use LastPass Premium as well.
    • It is recommended that you use a personal or alternate email address than your Penn affiliated email for your Premium account to avoid conflicts.
    • Enterprise and Premium accounts can be associated, so that users with both can have all of their passwords appear in one, merged vault.
    • This is often a good way to separate personal passwords from Penn affiliated passwords.
  • Multifactor authentication, via tools such as Google Authenticator, and Duo Mobile, are recommended, for security.  For more information, see the below link:
